Steve Jobs has stuck with his pay to own mentalitly when it comes to the iTunes store for many years even after several buffet style sites ate away at parts of the market. But now, as reported by the Financial Times just hours ago, Steve Jobs has hinted that Apple is “in discussions with the big music companies about a radical new business model that would give customers free access to its entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices.”

Are we understanding this correctly?

We’ll several other big corporations have done the same, with Microsoft already giving $1 per Zune to Universal Music Group. But this deal is much bigger, Steve Jobs has hinted he’s in talks with multiple media groups.

Recently Apple announced the movie rental program where users can watch movies for a lower price under the condition that the movie file will eventually expire but until now that was the only change in direction the iTunes store has seen.

Can Apple really achieve the dream, give away millions of songs for free for the first time since Napster (except Limewire of course) and can Apple get the media groups to agree that the new best plan is Free!
